Public oversight must evolve into a tool that not only detects irregularities but also helps prevent them and improves public policies.
The 21st Century Economy pillar examines the two fundamental conditions for sustainable growth in Mexico: responsible public finances and markets that operate with competition and innovation. Through the Public Finance and Regulation and Competition teams, we produce rigorous evidence on government revenue, spending, and debt, as well as on the regulatory frameworks that determine whether investment thrives and generates well-being. Without sound public finances or clear rules for competition, there can be no lasting development.

Why does our policy work matter?
Public Finance
Rights come at a cost, and someone must ensure that public resources reach their intended purpose. Political will alone does not guarantee access to healthcare and other rights. It depends far more on how the institutions responsible for delivering these public services are designed and funded. Our work demonstrates, first, that when institutions are weakened, people bear the consequences. Second, that well-grounded evidence can shape public agendas.
Regulation and Competition
Streamlining processes, clarifying regulations, increasing transparency, and digitizing administrative procedures can reduce costs for businesses, strengthen local public finances, and attract new investment. Our findings show that economic growth, employment, and public well-being can be advanced without compromising the protection of public goods, provided that regulations governing construction, business licensing, health, and the environment become smarter, clearer, and more effective.
